Nostr: The Protocol Ending Censorship Through Cryptography?
What is Nostr and how does it work?
Nostr is a social networking protocol that uses cryptography to protect published content and operates using clients and relays. Clients are used by users to connect to the network and publish content to relays, which are servers managed by others. Relays are used to retrieve and transmit the data published by users. Clients validate signatures to ensure that messages were sent by the person claiming to have sent them.
Why is Nostr an interesting alternative to Twitter and similar programs?
There are several reasons why Nostr can be an interesting alternative to Twitter and similar programs. First, Twitter and similar programs often have issues with censorship and account deletion, which can be frustrating for users. By using cryptography, Nostr allows users to maintain their identity and follower base even if they are banned or if a relay closes. Additionally, these platforms often have advertisements and use addictive techniques to encourage users to spend more time on their site. Nostr does not have these problems and can be used without being exposed to these distractions.
The benefits of Nostr for users
Nostr offers many advantages for users compared to traditional social networks like Twitter or Mastodon. First, the content published on Nostr is protected by cryptography, making it resistant to censorship. This means that users can publish freely on the network without fear of being banned or censored for their opinion or content.
Additionally, Nostr allows users to maintain their identity and follower base even if they are banned or if a relay closes. This means they do not lose their work and audience when they are banned or when the server they publish on closes. This provides a level of stability and increased freedom for network users.
It does not require many relays to function properly, which means there is less pressure on servers and a lower risk of outages or slowdowns. This makes the network more stable and accessible for users.
Finally, Nostr can be adapted to the client-relay server model, meaning that data is sent directly to the users who consume it, without needing to be stored.

The question of liability for remarks made and relayed by these relays must be raised.
In general, liability for remarks made on a social network depends on the law and the jurisdiction in which the social network is used. In some cases, relays may be held liable for remarks made by their users, while in other cases, only the users are responsible for their remarks. It is important to consider this issue of liability when using any social network, including Nostr.
How to use Nostr
- Create a public/private key pair using a Nostr client
- Save the private key: once you have created a public/private key pair, you should save the private key somewhere and keep it secret.
- Create multiple keys if necessary: the same key can be used on all Nostr clients.
- Update your profile: from the client you are using, you should be able to update your profile name, photo, etc.
- Make posts: the client should also show you posts from other people.
- Find users: astral.ninja has a global feed where you can see other people’s posts. The nostr.io/stats page shows some of the most prolific users. The damus.io/channels page shows some of the most active public channels.
A quick focus on keys
Public key
Unique, publicly known ID associated with your user on the Nostr network. It can be shared freely. Others can see your posts or follow you using only your public key.
Private key
KEEP OUT OF SIGHT FROM OTHERS! Secret key used to sign (or unlock) your public key. All content from your user public key will require a signature derived from your private key before being relayed. If a malicious actor discovers your private key, they can impersonate you on the Nostr network and view your encrypted private messages.
