To better understand the process, here is the insulation procedure using a megohmmeter in real conditions:
Why test a three-phase motor?
A motor that overheats, makes noise, or trips your installation (often via the **thermal relay** tripping) must be checked quickly. A precise diagnostic allows identifying if the fault comes from the winding or an insulation problem.
1. Winding Continuity Test (with a Multimeter)
The goal is to verify that the three internal coils (U, V, W) are not broken or in a dead short circuit.
Procedure to follow:
1. Cut the main power and disconnect the cables leading to the motor.
2. Set your multimeter to the Ohm (Ω) range.
3. Measure the resistance between terminals U1-U2, V1-V2, and W1-W2 (or between phases if the bridges are in place).
4. The three measured values must be almost identical (phase balance).
2. Ground Insulation Test (with a Megohmmeter)
This is the crucial step to detect a frame fault. For this, a Megohmmeter is used, as a standard multimeter does not inject enough voltage to detect an insulation leak under load.
Procedure:
1. Connect the “Line” terminal of the megohmmeter to one phase of the motor.
2. Connect the “Earth” terminal to the metallic frame of the motor (ensuring good contact).
3. Inject a test voltage (generally 500V DC for a 400V motor).
The insulation resistance must be greater than 0.5 MΩ. A value below indicates a “burnt-out” or damp motor that must be replaced or dried in an oven.
The insulation test is a crucial step in preventive maintenance to avoid unplanned production shutdowns.
